How it started
Price information in Sri Lanka has always been scattered. Wholesale rates live in market bulletins, retail prices sit on supermarket shelves, and vehicle prices are buried in classified ads. Comparing yesterday to today, or Dambulla to Pettah, meant asking around and hoping the answer was current.
Welandapola started in 2023 to fix that: record the numbers every day, keep them, and publish them for free. What began as a list of vegetable prices is now a price index spanning food, fuel, gas, gold, vehicles and the cost of living.
The index now holds price history reaching back to 1990, so a trend line shows what actually happened rather than a recent snapshot.
Welandapola began as a simple daily record of Dambulla and Pettah wholesale vegetable prices, kept because nobody else was publishing them in one place.
Fuel, gas, gold and rice were added, along with supermarket shelf prices — so a household could compare the wholesale rate against what they actually pay.
Vehicle listings were brought in at scale, with price trends, regional statistics and an import tax calculator built on the same stored history.
Everything is free to read in English, Sinhala and Tamil, with the full history kept so anyone can see how prices have actually moved.
Not affiliated with any government body, supermarket chain or dealer. No supplier, bank or broker can influence a figure on this site.
Every price is stored with its market and its date. Trend charts replay what was actually recorded rather than a smoothed guess.
The index is public. No paywall, no account needed to check a price, and no charge for the history behind it.
Sinhala, Tamil and English throughout — a market trader, a household shopper and an importer should all be able to use the same numbers.
Every figure quoted on this page comes from the same public data you can browse yourself.
